Seminar 14A - Quality Online Course Design: Addressing "Wicked Problems"

Tuesday, November 03, 2009 | 9:30AM–1:00PM | Korbel Ballroom 4D
Session Type: E09 Hybrid
"Wicked problems" in online course delivery may be familiar to those who teach or design courses, but they are rarely resolved. Characteristics of such problems include: they cannot be easily defined so that all stakeholders agree on the issue to solve; they have better or worse solutions; they have no objective measure of success; and they have no evident alternative solutions. Examples of "wicked problems" might include how to engage students who "lurk," what to do when course technology fails, how to help students who are not independent learners succeed, and how to solicit consistent participation.

If these issues are addressed during the course design process with a plan for challenges that may arise during delivery, faculty members can better offer instructional experiences that satisfy both learner needs and institutional objectives. This workshop will focus on addressing challenging online instructional problems, designing courses to prevent them, and dealing with them when they arise during course implementation.

PLEASE NOTE: A laptop is required in order to participate in the session's activities.
