Seminar 13A - Enterprising Edupunk: Getting the Most from Two Opposing Approaches in Running Large Web Applications

Tuesday, October 12 | 9:30AM–1:00PM | Meeting Room 209B
Session Type: E2010
Typically, there are two conflicting approaches for implementing emerging technologies on campus: the "edupunk" fast-and-cheap model versus the "enterprise" careful-planning-for-technology-that-will-last-a-lifetime approach. UBC, which has a rich history of running university's blogs and wikis, provides an example of how conservative and liberal approaches can complement instead of negate each other. Through adopting the best of both philosophies, UBC provides students, faculty, and staff with a rich social software–based offering that includes content management, sharing and republishing, e-portfolios, personal publishing, and teaching and learning applications. In the first part of the seminar, presenters will cover case studies and best practices from UBC in the form of open discussion with the audience. In the second part, participants will be organized in smaller, interest-based groups; each group will define and state the challenge, brainstorm the solution, and present it to the other groups.
