Seminar 18A - The Benefits and Challenges of Data Center Virtualization: The Internal Cloud

Tuesday, October 12, 2010 | 9:30AM–1:00PM | Meeting Room 303A
Session Type: E2010
The hype around cloud computing reaches the IT professional daily. A key recommendation that resonates across the hype is the need to develop an "internal cloud" to provide the benefits, mitigate the risk, and understand the complexities of adopting the cloud model. The internal cloud translates into creating a virtualized data center. This requires strong technical leadership, political savvy, and executive support. The resulting efficiencies are compelling, and the current economic realities create a climate for this complex change. This seminar uses a mix of presentation and audience participation to discuss key items including data center and server consolidation, standards, virtualization, and abstraction. We will present the terms surrounding the virtual data center, explore the work and challenges involved in creating it, and highlight its benefits.
