Data-Intensive Research: The Implications of "the Fourth Paradigm" for Universities Today

Thursday, October 20, 2011 | 10:00AM–10:50AM | Meeting Room 113A
Session Type: E11
A sea change is happening in academic research, caused by a data deluge that is affecting all disciplines. "The Fourth Paradigm" concerns data and the computational systems needed to manipulate, visualize, and manage large amounts of scientific data. A wide variety of scientists—biologists, chemists, physicists, astronomers, engineers—require tools, technologies, and platforms that seamlessly integrate into standard scientific methodologies and processes. Increasingly, the humanities and the social sciences are becoming data-intensive domains matching the sciences. This talk will illustrate the far-reaching changes this new paradigm will have on scientific discovery and what it means to you in supporting the advancement of research.
