GENI: Global Environment for Network Innovations

The Global Environment for Network Innovations is a suite of research infrastructure, sponsored by NSF, that's taking protoypical form nationwide. GENI enables deep programmability throughout the network, promoting innovations in network security, technologies, services, and applications. Researchers can install software deep into GENI to test large-scale experiments in future global systems, which run inside different GENI "slices," enabling a variety of future Internets simultaneously. Today's "mesoscale" GENI prototype spans 14 campuses and two national backbones (Internet2 and NLR), with at-scale growth envisioned for 100–200 campuses. We are operating and testing the first 20 future Internet experiments across the United States.
