CIO Effectiveness in Higher Education and the Future of the Profession

The higher education chief information officer is a relatively new role that is critical to the institution. In 2012, 50 percent of CIOs are predicting they will retire in the next 10 years. To further complicate this retirement challenge, technology leaders (those in the next organizational layer down from the CIO) may not be interested in the CIO position or adequately preparing for it if they are interested. This presentation will report on the results of a longitudinal higher education CIO and technology leader study conducted by CHECS, the Center for Higher Education Chief Information Officer Studies (http://www.checs.org).
