Seminar 02P - What Educators Can Learn from the Video Game Industry (separate registration required)
"Generation G" is the game generation. They think, solve problems, and communicate differently from any previous generation. Higher education has spent time training faculty and support staff in the areas of classroom technologies and distance learning delivery, but we have not adequately prepared for the digital environment where so many of our students spend their time: video games. This workshop directly addresses how educators can become literate in the world of video games by examining and demonstrating instructional design and learning principles commonly used in the video game industry. After examining the case for video game literacy within higher education, participants will be introduced to theories applicable to integrating game mechanics within learning environments. Lastly, the workshop will introduce participants to several approachable technologies that can support the process of integrating gamification within instruction.
