Open source packages such as OpenLDAP and CUPS contain the promise of a consistent, manageable user experience across the diverse herd of UNIX and UNIX-like systems found on campuses today. Unfortunately, many speed bumps must be overcome for these different systems to actually work together. This presentation will describe our design for providing unified authentication, backups, printing, and so forth, as well as our experiences that led to this design.
