Congress is poised to enhance consumer protection laws to address online safety and security, especially in light of recent data security breaches. Rapidly growing privacy concerns could decrease consumer confidence and lead to a decline in online activities, including e-commerce. The technology sector is urging a federal approach to address concerns that the patchwork of state laws create inconsistent requirements and lead to greater confusion.
