Balancing Technology and Privacy: The Directory Conundrum

When the University of Maryland implemented a directory to facilitate authentication and access to services, we struggled with balancing the need to keep data private against making data accessible to programmers and available for directory searches. This is a case study of the challenges we faced and how we resolved them.
