With the rapid development of e-learning systems, some content management systems lack the cohesiveness to foster a community of learners. East Carolina University has been successful by using a 3D virtual environment to engage students through simulations, interactive games, live video events, and peer collaborations. In addition, the use of problem-based learning provides a student-centered instructional method where student collaboratively solve problems, address issues, and reflect on their experiences through interactive game simulations.
