Around 2004, NC State faced technology challenges that threatened the future of its STEM-focused teaching and research mission. The central IT organization and the College of Engineering jointly researched and developed a solution-the first production cloud computing system as well as ideas and concepts that have informed today's cloud computing market. Operational cost-benefit and expansive new research opportunities have fueled continuing development, resulting in an open-source cloud computing solution with major support worldwide. Interestingly, what may prove of equal or greater value is the development of an intimate understanding of a paradigm shift and how it can be leveraged to achieve transformational outcomes.
