Providing Persons with Disabilities Mainstream Access to Digital Technology: The Challenges That Higher Education Must Meet - Sponsored by Cisco Systems, an EDUCAUSE Gold Partner

Equal access is a community value we all hold dear —and it's the law. Why isn't it a higher priority, and what can we do about it? With the integration of technology into all aspects of academic life, universities endeavor to come to terms with myriad challenges in providing equal access to institutional services. With thoughtful IT design and acquisition policies, well-guided investments, and committed leadership, universities can position themselves to successfully meet these challenges, yet many do not. As a consequence, students with disabilities are often left with separate but unequal access to technology, thereby reducing the quality of their educational experience and exposing the university to serious legal risk. In this session an expert panel will examine the reasons why universities fall short in meeting their moral and legal obligations to provide equal access to technology and what they can (and must) do to address this problem.
