The Nuts and Bolts of Student Engagement: A Peek Under the Hood of ChemVantage.org

Thursday, February 23 | 12:45PM–1:30PM | Broadway I/II, Plaza Level
Session Type: Professional Development
The single greatest factor in determining student success in general chemistry courses is time spent on task (aka student engagement). This session will take participants on a hands-on guided tour of ChemVantage.org, an open educational resource for teaching and learning general chemistry. We will explore how the incorporation of game elements into nongaming situations (gamification) provides strong motivations for student engagement and learning. We will also show how the increase in engagement leads to improved success for a group of more than a thousand students.
