Rethinking Online Discussion: Instructional Strategies for Engaging Students

Tuesday, February 12 | 4:45PM–5:30PM | Capitol Ballroom D
Session Type: Professional Development
In many online courses, discussion forums are used to facilitate online discussion, but engaging students is challenging in this environment. We examined if using a blog interface and revised instructional approaches could improve student engagement in online discussion. We surveyed students across six graduate-level courses to learn about students' perceptions of their learning experience compared to their previous uses of discussion forums in other courses. Based on our findings, we will discuss the usability of the blog interface and recommend instructional approaches faculty can adopt to better engage students in online discussions, thereby facilitating student learning and knowledge sharing.
