The Economic and Academic Impact of MOOCs

Thursday, February 14, 2013 | 10:30AM–11:15AM | Creekside I & II
Session Type: Professional Development
Higher education is undergoing a disruptive change with the emergence of massive open online courses. Fueled by ongoing calls for a less expensive college education that's available to an increasingly higher percentage of high school graduates, MOOCs are viewed as one solution. MOOCs will create significant administrative challenges for colleges and universities. The speaker will present conceptual models of what Arne Duncan calls "stackable" credits and the resultant economic and academic impacts of a broadscale MOOC implementation and the stackable credit model. Participants will engage in a discussion of the potential economic and academic scenarios and how IT systems can facilitate the changes.
