Two Southern Greats Joined in Matrimony for High-Density Storage

Wednesday, April 06 | 11:15AM–12:00PM | Concerto D
Session Type: Professional Development
Two institutions of higher learning, one public and one private, partnered to build a high-density storage facility, the Library Service Center (LSC). The marriage of these two institutions required an intricate bond involving ownership, borrowing privileges, security, access, services support, collections preparation, logistics, staffing, building location and design, and unique technology requirements. Why did we tie the knot? Printed books are used less frequently today, so why not consolidate materials and conserve space? The LSC was conceived to move toward a "bookless" library model while simultaneously offering an innovative, efficient preservation solution for a shared collection of materials, accessible to both university communities.

OUTCOMES: Recognize the planning process as the foundational component of success in a collaborative project of this magnitude * Learn about conflict resolution * Evaluate the benefits of a public/private institutional partnership
