The successful CIO delivers value by providing technology services that advance the mission of the institution and deliver competitive advantage. IT leaders need communication competence to influence and persuade executive leaders and peers of the value of IT in achieving institutional goals. The CIO must develop strategies that align IT investments with the institution's strategic direction and employ tactics that ensure successful implementation. The ELI Challenge project is designed to apply the learning objectives of the institute to a real world problem. In a group activity, you will propose an IT solution to an institutional challenge by making a presentation that explains your strategy and tactics and convinces the board to approve your proposal.
Objectives:
- Demonstrate the importance of IT strategic alignment to the core issues and priorities of the academic institution.
- Apply the core CIO competencies, such as adaptive communications, effective collaboration and partnership, and visionary leadership.
- Reflect on the difference between strategy and tactics and demonstrate examples of each.
