Framing Higher Education

A key element in successful communication and collaborations is knowing your partners. What are the major issues they are facing? What are they looking for? What do they need from you? In this session, we will be joined by senior campus leaders Robin Forman and Steve Everett from Emory University who will share with us their perspectives and insights. The majority of this session will be interactive Q&A.

Objectives:

• Gain a better understanding of what's on the minds of senior campus leaders.
• Gain insight on ways to communicate effectively with senior leadership.
• Understand how a senior campus leader views learning technology professionals.
• Gain ideas on how to address strategic issues in ways that are credible and relevant to campus leadership.

About Robin Forman:
Robin Forman became Dean of Emory College of Arts and Sciences on July 1, 2010 and also holds the title of Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics.

Forman previously was a member of the Rice faculty since 1987, being named full professor of mathematics in 1999 and serving as chair of the Department of Mathematics from 2001-2005. He served as Rice's dean of undergraduate studies from 2005-July 2010. He was a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania who earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard University, serving for two years as an instructor at MIT before going to Rice.

Forman's research, which has been funded by the NSF, NSA and DARPA, focuses on combinatorial methods in topology and geometry.

Among his varied avocational interests are chess, where he has attained the rank of Master; stand-up comedy; and songwriting. He and his wife, Ann Owens, have a son, Saul, who is 12.

About Steve Everett:
Steve Everett is Professor of Music and teaches composition, computer music, and directs the Music-Audio Research Center and and is Director of the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence at Emory University in Atlanta, USA. In addition he has been a visiting professor of composition at Princeton University and has been a guest composer at Eastman School of Music, Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève in Switzerland, Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, and Utrecht School of the Arts. Many of his recent compositions involve performers with computer-controlled electronics and have been performed in twenty different countries.

At Emory University, he has served as Chair of the Department of Music, Interim Director of the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry, Chair of the Faculty Council, and President of the University Senate.
