Effective leaders use a variety of strategies for communication. Understanding how to develop and use strategic communications in a number of forms provides tools for effective leadership. The session will review forms of communication and offer specific examples of how to communicate more effectively across multiple audiences. It will explore the power of politics in forming and delivering communications to leadership, peer groups, and end users while exposing the rapid rise of social media as new forms of communication channels. It will also bring to light the importance of collecting data and working to actively make sense of that data in your campus communication plan.

Objectives:

  • The learner will gain a better understanding of communication by understanding the basic principles of communication theory and understand how communication drives innovation and the importance of communicating differently to different audiences.
  • The learner will gain a perspective on strategic communications to the campus executive team while understanding the importance of informal communication.
  • The learner will gain a deeper appreciation for identifying emergent end user expectations as it relates to communication channels.
  • The learner will better understand the role that data plays in strategic communications and the importance of exposing understandable data in strategic communications.
