Chat rooms offer an exciting communication medium through which students can participate in a collaborative virtual community by sharing resources, knowledge production, creative inquiry, and active engagement. This presentation offers guidelines for developing constructive backchannel uses based on a two-year study conducted among graduate students at UC Berkeley's School of Information.
