The recent push for increased control over the definition of a course management system may prove a propitious moment to explore alternatives that move away from the closed, proprietary logic of instructional technologies. Open source software offers colleges and universities a number of possibilities that may provide entry points for reconsidering the value of affordable, flexible, and scalable virtual learning spaces.
