Continuous Improvement in Teaching and Learning: The Open Learning Initiative

Using intelligent tutoring systems, virtual laboratories, simulations, and frequent opportunities for assessment and feedback, the Open Learning Initiative (OLI) at Carnegie Mellon University creates open web-based learning environments that support the type of flexible and responsive instruction that fosters learning. As students work through OLI courses, the OLI system collects real-time data that drives four positive feedback loops for continuous improvement: to students, to instructors, to course designers, and to learning science researchers.
