The upsurge in online learning and proliferating calls for learning experiences appropriate for nurturing "21st-century skills" has come with a parallel need for the implementation of appropriate tools for improving and assessing online learning. We will overview using e-portfolios as a tool for learning and assessment, explore the concept of the portfolio, and then move to the use of Mahara as an example of a software tool that's used to create e-portfolios, particularly in the context of higher education.
