Course Activity and Digital Badge

Each registered participant will develop one activity that employs various concepts and strategies introduced in the course. Participants will be asked to complete assignments between the course segments that support the learning objectives and will receive feedback and constructive critique from the facilitator on how to improve and shape their work. Registered participants who successfully complete the entire activity will receive an EDUCAUSE digital badge recognizing their accomplishment.

Session 1: The Instructional and Technical Dynamics of Digital Badges

  • Why offer badges?
  • Define badge system
  • Explore existing badge systems
  • Meaning and value for all: Recipient, issuer, and observer
  • Under the hood: Deconstruct badge components and metadata

Session Activity:

  • Deconstruct existing badges and systems; identify learning objectives, ecosystem, value, and metadata.  Identify local projects or programs served by digital credentials.

Session 2: Taxonomy

September 19, 2017, 1:00–2:30 p.m. (ET)

  • Mapping meaning to badges
  • Getting started: Systems of varying levels of complexity; case studies
  • Relationships within a badge ecosystem
  • Outcomes: Designing badge benefits and rewards into the system
  • Assessment considerations: Triggers, evidence, experts, peers
  • Visualizing a new badge system through a site map, concept map, or napkin drawing
  • Organizing content associated with a badge
  • Developing timelines
  • Templates to assist

Session Activity:

  • Develop a taxonomy for an actual project at your institution.  Try your hand at creating one or more badges.

Session 3: Visual Design, Tools, and Best Practices
