Unified communication is more than just providing voice over IP. This merger of all forms of electronic communication is likely to be a disruptive technology as faculty, staff, and students realize that it enables change in the way we work. Distance learning, telecommuting, and collaboration are enhanced when "unicom" is used effectively, but, used ineffectively, it can be an expensive replacement for the telephone. This session will explore these issues through the Indiana University rollout of unified communications based on a technology collaboration between Nortel and Microsoft. The session will also include live demonstrations that highlight the potential.
