MOOCs in the Classroom? Results from a Controlled Study of Blended MOOCs in Public Universities

Monday, November 03 | 2:00PM–3:00PM
Session Type: Professional Development

Join Malcolm Brown, EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative director, and Veronica Diaz, ELI associate director, as they moderate this webinar with Rebecca Griffiths. From 2012 to 2014, Ithaka S+R conducted a study with the University System of Maryland to explore the benefits and challenges of embedding MOOCs in traditional courses. MOOCs taught by professors from a range of universities on the Coursera platform were blended into 14 USM courses across eight different campuses. Through our research, we were able to measure the impact of this hybrid approach on both students and faculty: What was the effect of this new model on student learning outcomes? How did students react to using MOOCs in the classroom? Did faculty find that using MOOCs saved them time in planning and teaching their courses? How did their role in the classroom change? Would they choose to teach with MOOCs again? In this webinar, Rebecca Griffiths will share data from hundreds of students and 20 faculty members involved in the study and reflect on lessons learned.
