AI for All: Fostering AI Literacy Among Faculty, Staff and Students

How best to address the crucial need to build literacy and ensure informed, secure, and responsible AI use by all campus constituencies? Our approach includes various training models (including in-person and Zoom sessions for faculty; AI administrative department road shows; and in-person, three-hour training series for admins) to support the differing needs of each group. We’ll discuss governance, which in our case is coordinating between an AI Faculty Working Group and an AI Administrative Working Group. We will share successful academic event types such as our unique Faculty Unconferences, and faculty and student panels in partnership with our learning and teaching center on topics such as "AI Across the Curriculum and Assignments That Avoid AI." We’ll explore the challenge of balancing equitable access, privacy, usefulness, and costs through the various LLM platforms Wellesley College supports. These include Google Gemini and NotebookLM, Amplify for access to ChatGPT and Claude, and embedded AI tools such as Zoom’s AI Companion. We’ll provide updates on our evolving support methods such as other formats/modes (videos and/or asynchronous activity modules) for preparing administrative staff to use AI tools securely and appropriately. Finally, we’ll detail our student support initiatives, which involve partnering with Career Education and providing extracurricular workshops on AI literacy taught by research and instruction librarians.
