Cards on the Table: Rethinking Assignments through Play

Tuesday, March 10, 2026 | 3:00PM–3:45PM ET | Ballroom A-C (Exhibit Hall)
Session Type: Poster Session
Delivery Format: Poster
What happens when faculty approach assessment design like a game? In this poster, we share how a simple deck of “assignment cards” invites faculty to reimagine how they assess student learning. Our version was customized for a small, primarily undergraduate, institution to include AI-aware, equity-minded, and context-specific assignments. Originally created by Seattle University Center for Digital Learning and Innovation, the card game is inspired by Apples to Apples and Cards Against Humanity. We’ve facilitated the game multiple times through our Level Up faculty development program, inspiring participants through creative discussion to redesign assignments and assessments that go beyond papers and exams. Attendees will explore our process, view early outcomes, and discover how gamification and low-stakes collaboration can empower faculty to design more inclusive, engaging, and authentic assessments in the age of AI.
