Learning Analytics can be overwhelming, with seemingly disconnected data automatically collected across learning management systems and their various integrated tools. It can be challenging to determine which data might offer relevant insights, and even whether the data itself is valid and reliable. In addition, the data that is available may not feel enough to inform your instructional goals, such as gauging learning or developing instructional interventions. This breakout session proposes that deliberate data collection using Dual Rubrics that align learning outcomes with assessment criteria can reinforce our available learning analytics by directly measuring teaching and learning. Dual Rubrics incorporate BOTH the assessment of learning (student performance) and the assessment of teaching (instructional effectiveness), measured side-by-side longitudinally across assignments and/or courses. Dual Rubrics can be leveraged as a tool for deliberate data collection that offers valuable insights into instructional gaps and presents data-informed and data-driven opportunities for making improvements in instructional practices.
