Motivating Today's Students with Collaboration and Discovery in the Library Electronic Classroom
Wednesday, March 30, 2011 | 2:15PM–3:15PM
Session Type:
Professional Development
The Massasoit Community College Library classroom sees a diverse group of students with different levels of information literacy competency and computer skill. This session will present a technique to successfully engage millennials, nontraditional, and remedial community college students. At Massasoit we have eliminated the need for long lecture-style explanations by allowing students to collaboratively discover effective database searching strategies. The process involves students in small groups being presented with an informational need, searching the appropriate database together, and reporting results to the class. Increased motivation, participation, and a sense of success among students are some of the benefits.
