Beyond the Sloan-C Five Pillars: Distance Learning Leadership in a Time of Transition

Wednesday, March 26, 2014 | 3:50PM–4:40PM | Room 550
Session Type: Professional Development

Given the dramatic changes in the distance learning landscape, what competencies, skills, and strategies are necessary to successfully lead e-learning programs, virtual campuses, or even whole institutions? What does the leadership literature say about distance learning leadership, and what specific models are most applicable to practitioners? In preparation for this flipped session, participants will reflect on their own leadership journey and assess which, if any, specific leadership theories and models have impacted their own practice. Presession readings and online discussion boards will be used to encourage participation in this highly interactive session.

OBJECTIVES: Learn how distance learning leadership is defined within the academic literature * Discuss the applicability of existing leadership theories to distance education leadership * Share individual leadership experiences and reflect on the journey * Assess individual knowledge and the use of leadership theories * Develop a plan to incorporate theory into practice
