Modernizing Web Server Architecture: Why More Is More!

Wednesday, March 26, 2014 | 2:50PM–3:40PM | West Prefunction Area
Session Type: Professional Development

At the University of New Hampshire, we have modernized our web hosting infrastructure by using Nginx as a web proxy to route and load balance requests to different servers that host a range of web technologies. We use virtual servers communicating on private IP networks to increase security while also giving us greater flexibility and scalability. Our own top-level domains allow us to move Drupal websites from development to test to production systems with no changes. We continue to expand on the automation and central management of this environment and will share our designs and latest projects.

OBJECTIVES: Understand the advantages of distributing a complex web hosting environment across multiple systems as opposed to consolidating on a few * Learn how localized top-level domains can be used to streamline movement of Drupal systems, from development to testing to production * Describe the security advantages brought in by using private IP networks to allow servers to interconnect
