Seeing the Invisible: Techniques for Improving Workplace Learning

Tuesday, March 25, 2014 | 5:30PM–6:20PM | Room 553
Session Type: Professional Development
People know how to learn, but they don't do it at work, suggests the organizational learning literature. This session aims to fight against this tendency. We will explore what it means to learn, what "resistances" to learning manifest themselves in the work context, imagine how a "learning" workplace would feel and act, and test out several simple but powerful techniques for improving group learning. The speakers draw on their lifetimes as educators, facilitators, learning advocates, team leaders, and trombonists to create an environment that is intellectually challenging, morally honest, and fun as heck.

OBJECTIVES: Be able to define successful group learning and understand organizational learning as a principle * Be able to articulate the constraints that act against organizational learning and give examples from your organization * Understand the seminal idea of making the "unseen" discussible * Be able to use a few powerful tools in your workplace context to improve learning * Be able to engage others in conversations about what it would "mean" to learn better as groups
