GIS and Story Maps in the Liberal Arts University: Lessons Learned and Future Plans

Wednesday, March 23, 2016 | 12:00PM–12:50PM | Room 550
Session Type: Professional Development
This presentation will discuss a project in which five professors integrated ESRI Story Maps within the curriculum during spring 2015 at Wesleyan University. Multiple disciplines were represented that traditionally have not embraced GIS in the classroom, including history, humanities, and world languages. Professors were generally positive, pointing out how spatial visualization provides new pedagogical and collaborative opportunities. Student responses were mixed; while many enthusiastically embraced Story Maps, others noted that more "traditional" content delivery methods might have been more effective. We will highlight some projects and discuss the outcomes as well as future plans to leverage Story Maps in the higher ed classroom.

Outcomes: Better understand the interdisciplinary potential for leveraging GIS in the classroom * Learn about the that tools are available to accomplish this, as well as their advantages and disadvantages
