Reframing the Framework: Information Literacy Frames through a Social Justice Lens

Tuesday, March 22, 2016 | 9:30AM–10:20AM | Room 553
Session Type: Professional Development
Information comes from power, and those in power often influence or control how information is gathered, organized, accessed, and understood. Through information literacy instruction, librarians have an opportunity to help patrons understand and challenge this power dynamic. This interactive session will examine how each of the frames of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy can be examined and taught from a social justice perspective. Participants will work together to unpack the frames, examine the social justice issues inherent in each, and develop ideas for addressing those issues in their instruction sessions.

Outcomes: Examine the ACRL Framework for IL from a social justice perspective * Develop strategies to integrate social justice in library instruction sessions * Understand how librarians can challenge or support the information status quo
