SEM01F - War Gaming 2005: An Exercise in Ethical Cracking
PLEASE NOTE: Separate registration and fee are required to attend this seminar.

Sunday, April 03, 2005 | 10:00PM–10:00PM
Session Type: Resources
The seminar will provide an overview of security practice, policy, and applicable law and will describe detection and prevention techniques. These topics will set the stage for an afternoon "war game." Given some strict ground rules, attendees will form into small teams and attempt to break in to several computers connected to the seminar network. The goal will be to "capture" as many of those hosts as possible in the time afforded.

Additional Notes About This Seminar: To maximize the experience, enrollment will be limited to 50 participants. As many attendees as possible should bring their own laptops so that teams will have at least one platform from which to wage their attacks. Target hosts will be Linux based; various tools will be served from Linux-based hosts; laptops can be any operating system, but must have an SSH client. Familiarity with command-line UNIX will be very helpful (typically used commands will be tar/gzip, cat, some variety of UNIX text editor, wget, and so forth). The team arrangement will help those who are new or fairly new to UNIX; wandering game "officials" will assist players and monitor them for rules violations.
