Scaling Up Your Network Monitoring: From the Garden Hose to the Fire Hose

Wednesday, May 07 | 5:30PM–6:30PM | Grand Ballroom Salon C/D
Session Type: Professional Development
As our high-speed networks have become vital tools for enhancing academic and scientific discoveries, the race continues for bigger pipes and faster connections. With these exponential changes to our core and border networks, institutions need to plan for similar adjustments to their monitoring infrastructure. Whether moving from 1G to 10G or from 10G to 100G, similar questions arise in our community about scaling up network monitoring. We will address monitor placement, explore options for load-balancing and aggregation, and provide recommendations for handling large traffic volumes (think 100G) with open-source IDS software.

Gain an understanding of load-balancing options for network monitoring * Get an overview of clustering and parallel processing options for IDS * Take away some notes and thoughts about how to scale up monitoring
