HIPAA privacy provisions have the potential to stifle electronic collaboration between physicians using secure hospital-based networks and faculty using more open university-based networks. The University of Pittsburgh will describe its innovative agreement with affiliated hospitals to use VLAN and VPN technologies to ensure continuing collaboration and compliance with the law.
