Universal design (UD) of instructional materials helps all students learn more effectively, including those with disabilities. The need to comply with national and state accessibility laws for students with disabilities and the growing use of pervasive technologies like iPods and smartphones are creating new educational challenges for instructional designers. Using UD when creating learning objects turns these challenges into important opportunities to transform instructors' knowledge and experience into learning objects that can adapt to the learning styles and technologies used by all students, including those with disabilities. This seminar will help participants understand universal design concepts and provide practical examples of how to start implementing UD at their institutions. Participants will learn about universal design principles; how UD facilitates learning for everyone, including students with disabilities; UD authoring of techniques and technologies; and media accessibility.
