Disciplinary Dialogues : Building Teaching-Focused AI Literacy Through Departmental Conversations

This session presents an approach to cultivating AI literacy and encouraging consideration of pedagogical and curricular change specifically related to teaching and learning at research-intensive universities. A key feature of this approach is creating space for conversation at the program level. Drawing from our experience at the University of Toronto, we'll share our framework for facilitating structured, discipline-specific conversations about AI's impact on disciplinary practice, pedagogical methods, curriculum development, and assessment strategies. We will describe the goals and structure of our three-part series developed to engage academic departments in collaborative reflection on how generative AI reshapes teaching, program outcomes, and course design in their unique academic context. We'll present findings from our pilot with multiple departments and offer a model for fostering meaningful faculty engagement with AI in teaching and learning.
