Exploring Opportunities for Mindful AI Integration with the OpenStax Writing Guide and a Custom GPT

This session explores integrating Open Educational Resources (OER) with generative AI in first-year composition courses. Using a custom GPT based on the OpenStax Writing Guide, 20 students in an English 1102 course engaged with a custom GPT and a tested Rhetorical Prompting Method developed at Kennesaw State University. This approach enabled students to strategically utilize AI as a co-writer, enhancing their rhetorical awareness, metacognition, and critical thinking. Mixed methods findings highlight how generative AI can complement human instruction, fostering reflective, ethical AI use. Attendees will discuss practical applications and strategies for ethically aligning AI tools with OER practices. They will also access the custom GPT and perform guided prompting.
