Can Design Communities Intentionally Curb GenAI-enabled Cheating Through Assessment Design?

This presentation aims to explore one question: Can instructors, instructional designers, and learning technology specialists (referred to as design communities) intentionally design assessments that curb GenAI-enabled cheating? The rapid adoption of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT (referred to as GenAI tools thereafter) has reshaped academic teaching and learning. For the design community, the use of these tools has enhanced student engagement, streamlined instructional design processes, and improved student assessment methods. For students, it has boosted creativity but also opened more cheating opportunities, especially for poorly designed assessments. Student reliance on these tools when taking assessments fosters a false sense of achievement. It deprives them of critical thinking, independent problem-solving, and basic reasoning capacity. This session will share practical, research-informed assessment design strategies to promote academic honesty. The presenter will explore examples of redesigned assessments and engage participants in interactive activities to help them create learning environments that balance academic integrity with future skills.
