Human-in-the-Loop AI: Pedagogy-First Workflows for Responsible Course Design

Generative AI tools are rapidly changing how instructional materials are created. While these tools can accelerate course development, institutions must ensure that AI-assisted workflows maintain pedagogical quality, accessibility, and academic integrity. This workshop introduces a human-in-the-loop course design workflow that positions AI as a support tool rather than a replacement for instructional expertise. Participants will explore a three-stage workflow for responsible AI-assisted course design: (1) AI-supported drafting of course structures and activities, (2) human review using pedagogical, accessibility, and equity frameworks, and (3) iterative refinement guided by instructional expertise. Through examples drawn from real course design scenarios, presenters will demonstrate how AI can support module planning, activity generation, and instructional alignment while preserving instructor voice and disciplinary rigor. During the session, participants will use structured prompts to generate a sample course module outline with an AI tool and apply a critique checklist focused on cognitive load, accessibility, and inclusive teaching practices. Participants will leave with practical prompts, evaluation tools, and a repeatable workflow that helps institutions integrate AI into course development while maintaining strong instructional design standards.
