Through the proliferation of high-speed Internet services, integrated multimedia components, and innovative collaboration software, technology has facilitated distance learning in higher education. Technology, however, is but one of several key factors in ensuring successful synchronous online education. The greatest challenge online course instructors face is that of reducing the "distance" and creating a truly interactive learning environment. To fully assess the efficacy of distance learning, one must consider convenience, technical quality, and pedagogical preferences as important elements in the overall learning experience.
