Course Activity and Digital Microcredential

Each registered participant will develop one activity that employs various concepts and strategies introduced in the course. Participants will be asked to complete assignments between the course segments that support the learning objectives and will receive feedback and constructive critique from the instructors on how to improve and shape their work. Participants who successfully complete the entire activity will receive an EDUCAUSE digital microcredential recognizing their accomplishment.

Session 1: Storytelling

Instructor: Cara Giacomini
March 4, 2020, 1:00–2:30 p.m. ET

This workshop will focus on the elements of a good story and tailoring your story to a specific audience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the elements of a good story
  • Construct multiple versions of a story to suit different audiences
  • Implement tips for communicating with leadership

Assignments

  • Group exercise: Start with why
  • Individual: Storytelling case study—preparing your story

Session 2: Data and Display

Instructors: Leah Lang and Cara Giacomini
March 11, 2020, 1:00–2:30 p.m. ET

This workshop will focus on finding good data, developing clear metrics, and displaying data in a way that effectively communicates your message.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify 4 rules for choosing good data
  • Understand how people process visual information based on Gestalt principles
  • Learn basic design elements to communicate effectively

Assignments

  • Group discussion: Who is your audience and how do you communicate with them?
  • Individual: Storytelling case study—selecting data for your story

Session 3: Display and Delivery

Instructors: Cara Giacomini and Kirk Kelly
March 18, 2020, 1:00–2:30 p.m. ET

This workshop will focus on creating an effective visual presentation, engaging your audience, and delivering your message with confidence.

Learning Objectives:

  • Improve your graphs and dashboards
  • Learn how to structure an effective presentation
  • Practice methods for projecting confidence
  • Construct multiple versions of a presentation to suit different time constraints

  • Individual: The elevator pitch
