Overview
Online courses can feel isolating, dry, and unengaging for both students and faculty. The distance inherent in polysynchronous formats raises barriers to meaningful interactions that foster effective learning. But we can create online courses in all formats that welcome and support all of our students, that exclude or marginalize no one, and that faculty find rewarding to teach as well. With a focus on Universal Design for Learning, Culturally Responsive Teaching, and social and emotional connections that promote a strong learning community, we’ll explore ways of designing and facilitating online courses to promote rich and robust teaching and learning interactions.
Learning Outcomes:
NOTE: You will be asked to complete assignments in between the course segments that support the learning objectives stated below. You will receive feedback and constructive critique from course facilitators during the breakout portions of the course segments.
- Discuss evidence-based course design and facilitation strategies that promote equitable and inclusive online engagement
- Explain and begin to apply Culturally Responsive Teaching approaches
- Explain and begin to apply Universal Design for Learning principles
- Identify practical techniques to maximize social and emotional connections for increased student learning
