The Learning Lab experience is supported by both asynchronous and synchronous components. Each Learning Lab sequence includes a set of resources, an asynchronous discussion, and an interactive live session, all of which culminate in the development of a project or application to apply learning to local and specific contexts in support of the learning objectives.

Learning Sequence 1

Data governance is key to ensuring that institutional data is understood, treated as a strategic asset, and managed in a way that provides reliable information for decision-making. A solid data foundation is essential. It’s more important than ever to have a plan for the processes and methods used to manage data. In this learning sequence, you’ll explore the key elements of data governance, as well as the importance of data governance in analytics initiatives. We will explore how to build partnership and consensus across the institution to help ensure a stable and solid foundation for governance, and you’ll begin planning a data governance strategy that will work at your own institution.
Learning Sequence 2
March 10, 2022, 3:00–4:30 p.m. ET
A data governance framework allows you to address key data governance elements such as roles and responsibilities, access policies, data standards, and data definitions. In this learning sequence, you’ll get ideas for what might make or break a governance initiative. You’ll be introduced to some methods for developing a roadmap that will aid you in working with your institution to develop an approach that will work in your community.

The Learning Lab will conclude with an application or implementation project (described below) and a closing live session to review and process the learning from the lab.
Lab Implementation Project
You will have the opportunity to draft an initial, high-level plan for developing data governance at your institution. The plan should include either a SWOT or SOAR analysis to assist with and help inform the discussions. Your plan will include strategies for including appropriate stakeholders and communicating with campus leaders. It should be grounded in how your institution functions, and it should reflect the kind of collaboration and organizational structures that exist within your institution to position it to be successful. This is not meant to be a detailed plan but more of a guide and proposal that could be taken to leadership to help start a discussion about refining the plan and steps required to implement it.
