Learning Experience

The Learning Lab experience is supported by both asynchronous and synchronous components. Each of the two Learning Cycles includes a set of resources, an asynchronous discussion, and an interactive live session, all of which culminate in the development of a project or application to apply learning to local and specific contexts in support of the learning objectives.

Schedule

Welcome Session

November 6, 2023, 12:00–1:00 p.m. ET

This is a live session to learn the details of the Learning Lab, the Canvas site, and expectations for the microcredential. There will also be time to get to know your fellow Lab partners and facilitator.

Learning Cycle 1: Foundations of CARE

November 8, 2023, 12:00–1:30 p.m. ET

Decades of research shows how inclusive and equitable learning environments can promote learning and close achievement gaps, especially for students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. In this learning cycle, we will explore the research foundations of CARE and examine case studies that illustrate these principles in both face-to-face and online learning environments. We will also collaboratively discuss how to implement these strategies and overcome potential roadblocks.

Learning Cycle 2: Implement and Assess CARE

November 13, 2023, 12:00–1:30 p.m. ET

Facilitating change and influencing teaching practice at any level of scale is challenging, especially in an environment where many educators are asked to do more with less. In this learning cycle, we will develop detailed implementation plans highlighting inclusive and equitable teaching practices that range from those that are relatively easy to establish to entire course redesigns that leverage all aspects of the CARE framework. Finally, we will explore ways to assess the impact of CARE on student learning and well-being to promote continual improvement.

Review and Reflect Session

November 20, 2023, 12:00–1:30 p.m. ET

The Learning Lab will conclude with an application or implementation project (described below) and a closing live session to review and process the learning from the lab.

Lab Implementation Project

The final application project will provide participants with multiple options to implement the CARE framework in ways that match their specific work and personal goals. These options include the opportunity to redesign one or more learning activities, create professional development materials, or explore and synthesize the scholarly research for practitioners and/or stakeholders. All projects will receive feedback from the Learning Lab facilitators and peers.
