Designing What’s Next: Career Sustainability in Higher Ed Security and Privacy
Careers in higher education security and privacy are rarely linear. Early-career practitioners may struggle to see growth beyond technical roles, while experienced leaders carry expanding responsibilities without time to chart strategic next steps. This interactive session helps participants across early-, mid-, and senior-career stages design sustainable, values-aligned careers. Facilitators guide attendees through a practical framework informed by peer input and anonymized insights to identify transferable strengths, articulate professional value beyond job descriptions, and explore pathways across security, privacy, IT, and governance.Through concise career narratives, guided reflection, and peer dialogue, participants will craft a clear value proposition statement, develop language for communicating security and privacy contributions in terms meaningful to campus leaders and partners, and identify realistic next steps—whether entering the field, preparing for leadership, or moving toward roles like CISO as veteran professionals retire. The session complements technical and governance content by focusing on people, influence, and intentional growth, aligning personal goals with institutional priorities.
